New York, NY – June 19, 2008 – An awards luncheon was held today to recognize the winners of the Digital Edge 2008 “Key to the Future” Scholarship Competition at the company’s corporate headquarters at the Teleport in Staten Island.

This year’s “Key to the Future” Scholarship was awarded to three well deserving Staten Island High School students: Matthew Bowlin of College of Staten Island High School of International Studies; Patrick Lapinski of Michael J. Petrides School; and Yevgeniy (Eugene) Shteynvarts of Staten Island Technical High School. Each student will receive a $3,000 scholarship award.

The Digital Edge “Key to the Future” Scholarship Competition was established to recognize and award extraordinary Staten Island high school students who have significant achievements and knowledge in the information technology field. This year’s competition was to design a school Emergency Notification System. The resulting system was required to notify students, parents, faculty and staff with school warning, information, or emergency messages. Notification was to be accomplished via voice or text messages on home and office telephones, cell phones, or e-mail. The competition selection criterion was based on the overall solution architecture; implementation and technology use; user interface, usability and practicality; and a final presentation.

Commissioner Bruno congratulated the winners and commented that “he would review their design to see what ideas he can incorporate” in the currently piloting Notify NYC system to keep New York City residents aware of incidents and what action they should take.
